Tourism Minister Announces Launch of Over 1,200 New Beds by Year-End

Minister of Tourism Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed that 1,290 new tourism beds are expected to be introduced across the Maldives before the end of 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Wednesday, Minister Thoriq stated that 156 tourism-related projects are currently under development throughout the country. He noted, however, that work at 61 sites has been delayed due to various challenges, and emphasized that efforts are ongoing to resume progress on those projects.

The Minister also provided updates on properties designated for tourism under different investment models since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.

“Ten sites have been awarded for tourism development through closed bidding, while three have been allocated under the cross-subsidy model. Additionally, three sites have been opened for public bidding,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s goal to attract 2.3 million tourists this year, Minister Thoriq said that promotional campaigns are being ramped up during the traditionally slower tourism periods to sustain momentum throughout the year.

Tourism statistics indicate that approximately 1,500 new beds were added to the market last year.
