Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal Commends President Muizzu as Maldives Achieves aNew Security Milestone with Drone Launch

In a recent social media post, the Tourism Minister of Maldives, Ibrahim Faisal, has lauded President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his leadership and the transformative role he is playing in the nation’s history. The Minister’s expression of support comes on the heels of a significant development in Maldives’ security infrastructure: the launch of drones for surveillance purposes within the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

President Muizzu, in a ceremony held at N. Maafaru airport on 15 March 2024, officially inaugurated the deployment of drones acquired for the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF). This strategic move underscores President Muizzu’s commitment to bolstering the country’s security apparatus and reducing dependency on foreign assistance in this critical area.

The drones, known as ‘Bayraktar TB2,’ were acquired through an agreement with the Turkish government. These state-of-the-art UAVs boast impressive specifications, including a communication range of up to 300 kilometers, a payload capacity of 150 kilograms, and the ability to fly for 27 hours at speeds ranging from 70 to 120 knots. With an operational maximum altitude of 18,000 to 25,000 feet, these drones offer a significant surveillance and reconnaissance capability.

Moreover, President Muizzu’s administration has taken a proactive step by establishing a dedicated base for military drone operations at Maafaru. This decision not only enhances operational efficiency but also underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technological advancements for national security.

One of the key highlights of these drones is their versatility. In addition to intelligence surveillance operations, they also possess the capability to conduct precision strikes. This dual functionality significantly enhances Maldives’ defense and reconnaissance capabilities.

President Muizzu’s focus on reducing the nation’s dependency on foreign powers for security-related matters aligns with his electoral pledges. By investing in cutting-edge technology and strengthening the island nations capabilities, his administration is laying the foundation for a more secure and self-reliant Maldives.

The launch of these drones marks a significant milestone in Maldives’ defense strategy, symbolizing a shift towards greater autonomy and resilience. It reflects President Muizzu’s vision for a sovereign and prosperous Maldives, capable of safeguarding its territorial integrity and national interests. As Minister Faisal aptly observes, President Muizzu’s leadership is indeed poised to change the course of Maldivian history.
