World Tourism Day 2024: Tourism and Peace

September 27 has been designated as World Tourism Day as a worldwide observance by the United Nations World Tourism Organization since 1980. This date was selected since the UNWTO’s statutes were adopted on that day in 1970. In the history of tourism worldwide, the passage of these statutes is regarded as historic. This day aims to increase understanding of the role that tourism plays in the global community and to illustrate how it influences social, cultural, political, and economic values around the globe.

The World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) applauds the World Tourism Organization’s (UN Tourism) choice to have “Tourism and Peace” as the theme for the 2024 World Tourism Day celebration. The concept is especially relevant given the conflict-ridden and divided world we currently live in.

The Committee emphasizes the critical role of tourism as a catalyst for peace, mutual understanding, and goodwill among people worldwide, acknowledging the industry’s considerable significance in building intercultural comprehension as a basis for peaceful and equitable development.

World Tourism Day Message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres “Tourism brings people together. On this World Tourism Day, we reflect on the profound connection between tourism and peace. Sustainable tourism can transform communities by creating jobs, fostering inclusion, and strengthening local economies. By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence. Tourism can also promote economic interdependence between neighbors, encouraging cooperation and peaceful development. At the same time, tourism broadens horizons, Every traveler can be an ambassador, engaging respectfully with local populations, recognizing our diversity and shared humanity, and the values that unite us all. As we celebrate tourism, it let us travel responsibly, build bridges, and promote mutual respect among cultures and nations. Together, we can harness the power of tourism to advance peace and prosperity for all.”
